Mindset

Job Searching can be STRESSFUL

It is NORMAL to feel this way and it’s due to something called our “negativity bias”. This can explain why we often dwell on insults more than compliments and focus our attention more quickly on negative rather than positive information (PositivePsychology.com). Psychological responses like stress and anxiety can make us feel disengaged, and actually cause us to make more mistakes.

You may find yourself “mass-applying” for ANY job, rather than focusing on quality applications for jobs you actually WANT. Smart recruiters will recognize this.

INSTEAD, here are some ways to help shift your mindset while job searching. A positive mindset will come across in your job search.

Treat your job search like it’s a job itself. Hone up on your MS Office skills or learn a new technology to track your applications And then add this to your list of skills! 😉

Know that only 2-3% of applications get to the interview stage and that to be unsuccessful at the interview stage, you must be doing something right. Think of it as practice for your next interview. On that note, never turn down a chance to interview because it’s great training!

Take breaks, get outside, and be kind to yourself. Remember this is temporary, and there are better things to come. This too shall pass.
