Something that I’ve been struggling with lately is staying motivated while working from home. I’ve been working hard to pull myself together, and thought I’d share some tips that I find work for me. Maybe they’ll work for you, too; whether you’re working from home or job seeking from home.
Stick to a routine.
Get up, work out, eat, and go to bed at the same time each day. It’s that simple. You’ll notice a big difference.
Put on pants.
It’s easy to slip into the “day time PJs” look when your morning commute has become rolling out of bed and switching on your computer. Try getting up and dressed before you power on for the day. You’ll be surprised how good you’ll feel, and how willing you’ll be to turn on video in your morning zoom meetings.
Get outside, be one with nature.
The days that I get out for a walk before I start my day (even before I have my coffee) are always my most productive. If I start this routine on a Monday, I’m more likely to continue it on Tuesday, through to Friday.
Stay organized.
Lately this has been my biggest challenge. I work full-time, I volunteer for several organizations, I began New Leaf Careers, and of course I want to spend quality time with my husband and our friends. At times it can feel really overwhelming, like there’s no way I’ll get it all done.
Here’s my (not so) big secret: I KILLED MY TO DO LISTS.
That’s right, folks. Get rid of your to-dos. They are never complete and only get bigger and more overwhelming as time goes on. Instead, use your calendar. Block periods of time to work on tasks, and break tasks up into smaller tasks. If something doesn’t get done, just move it out a few days. No pressure! HONESTLY, this will change your life.
Be Kind to Yourself.
I know we’re all tired of hearing it, but these are tough times. There is a lot of unrest in the world. If you didn’t complete everything you were supposed to today, it’s fine. Tell yourself, “it’s ok” and don’t be afraid to ask for help. Hey, you’re beautiful and amazing and you’re surviving a freaking global pandemic. Be kind to yourself. You deserve that much.
